Travelling

Once upon a time traveling with the Greek public transportation was an adventure. Thing have changed. Everything has been modernized. New trains, busses and boats have been purchased. Traveling around the country is now comfortable, punctual and continues to be cheap. This article contains all the website addresses needed, before starting your visit to Greece.
Boats leaving from Piraeus have destinations to all the islands of the Aegean, Crete and Kavala. In order to visit the Ionian Islands (but also Italy) you should take one of the boats from Killini, Patra or Igoumenitsa. In the website of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine every day’s time-table is listed. Traveling by boat is the most comfortable way, although it is quite expensive and some islands are long hours away.
The Greek Organization of the Railway System (OSE) takes you cheaply all around the country. There are also discounts for E.U. students and groups. Unfortunately OSE’s official website does not have an English version, but there is 00302105297002-3, which you can call for more information.
By bus you can get anywhere. There are two major stations. The Kifissos Station is on Kifissos avenue (+302105124910) and the coaches are for the Peloponnese, Aitolokarnania, Macedonia and the Ionian Islands. The other bus station is on Liossion street (+302108317153), and their destinations are Central Greece, Evia and Thessalia. The website provides many information about the destinations, but don’t forget to double-check by calling the appropriate station.
